New? Start Here.
Everybody starts somewhere. Yep, even the people who make it look easy.
Curious about swimming, biking, running, or maybe even trying a triathlon? You've come to the right place.
We've rounded up some beginner-friendly tips, helpful resources, and things we wish we'd known when we started.
No pressure. No fancy gear required. Just pick something that sounds fun and give it a go.
Swimming. Biking. Running. All in one race. Yep, really.
A triathlon is an endurance event where you swim, then bike, then run, in that order. You even get to change gear in between (that's called a transition, and yes, it's part of the race).
But here's the thing: not all triathlons are Ironmans. Some are short, beginner-friendly events. You don't have to be great at all three sports. You don't need the fanciest equipment. And you definitely don't need to look like a professional.

Not ready to get your toes wet? Try a Duathlon!
All the multisport fun, minus the swimming. Duathlon combines biking & running. It's a great way to dip your toes into multipart (figuratively, of course) without ever getting in the water.
Swim.
You would be amazed how many people barely know how to swim when they sign up for a triathlon (myself included!) Start with a swim lesson, start at the pool and check socials for local open water swim clubs.
Backstroke the entire swim? I've seen it done!
Run.
Fast, slow or somewhere in-between. Find your stride and those endorphins. New to running? Start with a mix of walking and running to build distance and confidence.
Walking counts!
Pick Your Adventure.
Bike.
Dusting off an old bike or already a seasoned cyclist? The bike is where you'll spend the most time in a triathlon. New to riding? Start on a local paved trail to build confidence without the traffic.
Yes, your butt will get used to it.
Put them together.
Which discipline is your strongest and which needs a little extra love? Then practice putting them together.
Who's idea was this?
